Low Effort, Big Impact. Easy Landscape Lighting

As the days get longer and warmer, most of us are spending more time outside. Since our outdoor living spaces can function as true extensions of our home, the backyard is prime real estate. We clean the deck, freshen up the garden, fire up the grill… and then night falls, and all that hard work disappears unless we flip on the harsh floodlights. Nothing kills the mood faster than squinting into a security light.

The good news is that creating beautiful outdoor lighting is surprisingly simple, affordable, and doesn’t require an electrician. In fact, low‑voltage landscape lighting is one of the easiest and most impactful DIY upgrades you can make. The whole system comes down to three parts: a transformer, low‑voltage wire, and fixtures. The transformer plugs into an outdoor outlet, the wire doesn’t need to be buried, and most fixtures snap together without tools.

Designing your system is easier than you think:

1. Check your outdoor outlet. Make sure you have a GFCI‑protected outlet available for the transformer.

2. Walk your yard. Think about the effects you want:

  • Uplighting trees

  • Washing shrubs or architecture

  • Creating pools of light along paths

Count how many of each you’ll want. You can always adjust later.

3. Talk with us. We’ll check to make sure you have the right mix of fixtures and size the transformer correctly. Transformers range from simple on/off models to smart versions you can control from your phone or via voice with your smart home assistant (Alexa, Google Home).

4. Gather your wire and accessories. Get more wire than you think you’ll need, and if your runs will be long, opt for the higher gauge (10 or 12), plus any stakes or quick connectors to make installation and future adjustments easy.

Installing your system

  1. Place your fixtures where you want them. Most simply stake into the ground.

  2. Run the wire from the transformer to each fixture (don’t plug anything in yet). Keep runs as short as possible to avoid voltage drop.

  3. Connect fixtures to the wire, then connect the wire to the unplugged transformer. Plug it in and test everything. After dark, fine‑tune the aiming and spacing.

  4. Cover the wire with mulch or soil. No conduit needed—just keep it protected and out of sight.

Once everything is in place, your yard will feel bigger, more inviting, and completely transformed at night. Thoughtful lighting adds drama, depth, and a whole new perspective to your landscape, and your guests will think you’ve spent a ton on a professional installation.
